OUR MISSION

To rescue, protect and prevent the abuse of equines through rescue operations, education, advocacy and investigations. Working closely with the authorities and other rescues and sanctuaries to help equines in need.

BRIGGS was one of the earliest rescues for WRERS. Found in an auction pen he was a terrible mess. Thanks to a couple of wonderful farriers and vets, he is now a much loved pet, ambassador for the rescue and resident lawn mower. He is living proof of how wonderfully strong and brave horses can be. Especially retired racehorses.

FORD was part of a herd of american mustangs who had been brought to Canada and later seized under the Animal Protection Act in Feb 2007. After being alerted to the situation via an internet plea from a friend of the former owner, WRERS became involved in its first large rescue effort. Working with american mustang advocacy groups and the authorities, we were able to purchase most of the mustangs at auction. Public response was incredible and most of the horses were adopted out within a few weeks.

In spring 2008 WRERS took in 7 ponies that were part of a herd seized by the ASPCA and run through auction. They were extremely thin, wormy and covered with lice. One of the babies had to be hospitalized for a week due to his weakened condition. They were all virtually unhandled and it took our volunteers quite a while to gain the trust of most of them. Physically they all recovered quickly and most have been adopted into loving homes.

Drum is handsome older standardbred who found himself unwanted due to a death in the family. He was apparently a lonely boy as he kept escaping and visiting with the neighbors! he had no health issues to overcome, just needed some love and attention. We even started his training under saddle to give him a job to do until his "forever home" showed up.
